The Relationship Test: If It Adds Complexity, It Costs You

You can evaluate the health of a relationship by how you feel after interacting with that person. Do you feel lighter and energized, or do you feel like you just completed unpaid emotional admin work?

If it feels like admin, that relationship is costing you far more than you realize.

Low-Complexity Relationship: Direct Call ──> Genuine Connection ──> Lower Heart Rate ──> Energy Reclaimed
High-Complexity Relationship: Decode Messages ──> Manage Their Moods ──> High Heart Rate ──> Emotional Fatigue

Minimalism isn’t just about clearing physical closets or digital files—it applies equally to your social circle. Some people add life; others add noise.

The Complexity Tax

Every high-complexity relationship carries a hidden tax on your time, attention, and mental energy.

Low-Complexity Dynamics High-Complexity Dynamics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Straightforward communication. Constantly decoding ambiguous text messages.
No performative obligations. Managing someone else's emotional state.
Leaves you feeling calm and rested. Leaves you needing a nap after every visit.

We often tolerate high-complexity relationships out of a false sense of loyalty, confusing loyalty with tolerating endless chaos. True loyalty means showing up for people who actively participate in your life, not exhausting yourself managing people who make your life harder.

The 3 Relationship Filters

Apply three practical filters to assess where your energy goes and where boundaries are needed:

Filter Area Assessment Tool Core Question
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Health Impact 24-Hour Body Check "Does this interaction lower or raise my baseline stress?"
2. Independence The Solo Test "Does this connection help me grow, or keep me dependent?"
3. Focus & Purpose The Purpose Question "Where will I be in 3 years if this dynamic stays unchanged?"

Filter 1: Does This Relationship Remove Stress or Add It?

Your body often recognizes relational strain long before your conscious mind acknowledges it.

  • The 24-Hour Body Check: Pay attention to how you feel 24 hours after hanging out or talking with someone. Do you feel calm, or do you experience a tight chest while replaying the conversation? If an interaction consistently adds stress, you don’t need a dramatic confrontation—simply add physical or digital distance.

Filter 2: Does This Make Me More Independent or More Dependent?

Healthy relationships build independence. They encourage you to stand strong on your own rather than shrinking yourself to keep others comfortable.

  • The Solo Test: If you are terrified to spend a weekend alone, or if you must ask permission to be yourself, that is not love—that is a management job. Strong relationships consist of two independent individuals choosing to walk together.
Dependency Trap: Shrink Your Life ──> Manage Reactions ──> Fear of Being Alone
Healthy Alliance: Independent Self ──> Mutual Support ──> Shared Direction

Filter 3: Does It Remove Distraction or Is It The Distraction?

Some high-drama dynamics act as a continuous distraction from your actual purpose. You will never be bored, but you will also never finish anything meaningful.

  • The Purpose Question: Ask yourself: “If I keep this relationship exactly as it is for the next three years, will I be closer to the life I want, or further?” If the answer is further, adjust your time and boundaries immediately.

"I value our connection, but I'm keeping my evenings dedicated to family and rest. Let's catch up on Saturday instead of daily messaging."

Simplify Your Circle

You do not need a massive social network. You need a small circle that doesn’t require emotional gymnastics to be included.

Apply these filters to high-complexity dynamics in your life, set clear and kind boundaries, and protect your energy for what truly matters. Less noise. More life.
