Understanding Your Blood Sugar
What is HbA1c?
HbA1c is a blood test that shows how much glucose (sugar) is attached to your red blood cells. It gives a picture of your average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months.
What is a normal HbA1c level?
- Normal: Below 5.7%
- Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
- Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
Why is HbA1c important?
A high HbA1c level can increase your risk of:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Kidney disease
- Nerve damage (neuropathy)
- Eye problems (retinopathy)
How can I lower my HbA1c?
- Healthy eating: Focus on whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
- Regular exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days.
- Weight management: If you’re overweight, losing weight can help.
- Medications: Your doctor may prescribe medications to help manage your blood sugar.
If you have concerns about your HbA1c level, talk to your doctor. They can provide personalised advice and support.
